Holidays in Tenerife
The sunny volcanic island of Tenerife in the Canaries welcomes streams of visitors at every time of year. Its mild climate offers spring temperatures during winter and warm but not too hot temperatures in the summer.
There are thousands of apartments and villas to rent for relaxing breaks. Many can be rented for several weeks at a time as winter escapes. See self catering apartments in Tenerife.
One interesting architectural characteristic of apartments and villas in Tenerife is the ornate wooden balcony. Holiday apartments tend to have the usual concrete balcony rather than traditional Tenerife style. Look out for them when you visit.
About Tenerife
The island of Tenerife is quite amazing, the lunar landscapes and volcanic peaks of Tenerife rise through the clouds to a height of 3,718 metres at El Teide volcano, the highest point in Spain. Visitors flock to the El Teide National Park and take the cable car for amazing views from the top.
Most holidaymakers stay in villas, apartments and hotels around the coast where beach resorts have developed over many years. The resorts all have beaches, small harbours and plenty of tapas bars, other eateries and entertainment.
The warm seas around Tenerife teem with marine life. Every boat trip almost guarantees a dolphin or whale sighting. There are also enormous turtles and multitudes of fish in crystal clear waters. Needless to say, the sea food in the Tenerife and the Canary Islands is superb.
Tenerife is a major banana growing area in Spain. The fertile valleys and indeed very fertile nook and cranny has banana trees. These naturally ripened bananas have a lovely sweet taste. The Canarian palm grows along many roadsides, poinsettias grow tall and strong creating red splashes of colour.
Activities on offer in Tenerife
The island and nature reserve of La Gomera is a 35 minute ferry trip away from Tenerife. See the unique laurel forest. Catch the car ferry from the largest resort on the island, Playa de las Americas, on the south west coast. La Gomera is hilly and exhibits similar volcanic crags to the rest of the Canary Islands. It is very popular with hill walkers and people looking for a peaceful retreat in Spain.
Deep sea game fishing - plenty of boats for fishing trips out at sea, catch marlin and big fish.
Jet ski safaris and numerous other water borne sports such as surfing, wind surfing, para surfing (especially on the south coast of Tenerife). Whale and dolphin spotting with the opportunity to swim from the boat.
Organised coach and jeep trips around the island although the local buses go to the most popular places. Car hire is reasonably priced.
Places on your list of unmissable places in Tenerife should include the elevated hamlet of Masca, accessed via kilometres of hairpin bends near Los Gigantes. For the fit there is a 6 km trek down to the coast and a water taxi back to Los Gigantes. At Los Gigantes are the second most tall cliffs in the world and a trip to the El Teide National Park and volcanoes.
There is plenty of the usual attractions on holiday such as markets, bars and beaches, pedaloes and speed boats. The island is very clean, even the beaches are swept on a daily basis.
